The buildings that
make up Kenwood Forest originally were built by the Federal
Government as rental housing for soldiers and their families
returning to the area after World War II. Each building was
divided into four 2 bedroom apartments, two on the first floor and
two on the second. Some buildings had basements for additional
storage; others did not. Over time, the soldiers and their
families moved away, but the 650+ apartment complex continued to be
home to many in the Washington area. By
the mid to late 1970's, the Holladay Corporation bought the property
and began to convert the apartment buildings to town homes.
Some of the four unit apartments became three town homes; others
were converted to two larger town homes. Windows were changed
to doors; doors were changed to windows. Roof lines and
facades were varied for architectural interest. The conversion
was carried out in three phases. The apartments on Fairfax
Road were converted first, then Hillandale and lastly Offutt Lane
and Chevy Chase Drive. The entire project took place over
several years from the late '70's to early '80's. When it was
completed, a new and very special part of Chevy Chase was born!
